Young At Heart at the Avant Garde:
Sarah Catalfo's Maybe Collection

Peter Pan may have been on to something when he said that he never wanted to grow up, or at least, not grow up entirely. There was one designer at Avant Garde on Sunday March 9, whose designs inspired both the young, and the young at heart, proving that fun never goes out of style

At Avant Garde, a fashion show by Avion, there was certainly room for, and encouragement of, new and interesting designs. Sarah Catalfo, 18 year old Fashion Management major at George Brown College, launched her new clothing line "Maybe" at the show. Despite being only 18 years old, Catalfo's collection proves that fun and imagination can exist alongside maturity and professionalism. Her designs embody the innocence and spirit of a little girl without sacrificing the maturity and class of a woman.

The ambiance created by Catalfo's segment of the show was fun and energetic suggesting that runway fashion shows should not be stiff or ack personality. When her models took to the runway the audience could feel their enthusiasm, something that seems to be relatively non-existent on the fashion scene these days. Too often are models required to act like moving mannequins, rather than human beings, and to let the clothes speak for themselves. However, Caraolfo's line definitely benefitted from the casual demeanor that the models undertook- proving that her line is not simply about the clothing itself, but about having fun in the clothes

Catalfo's line relies mostly on satin, chiffon and knit fabrics paired with turquoise, green and pink colours. These elements are selected to represent a "little girl's tea party all grown up", she says. She feels that her line is "very real" and is suited for the "fashion forward" who want to enjoy what they are wearing.

Her first show seemed to be very well received and if she continues on this path her dream of having "everyone know [her] name" may become a reality in the near future. Her drive and determination are inspiring for someone so young and it is always exciting to see new design ideas strutting down the runway. Catalfo reminds us of the importance of keeping in touch with our imagination and that it is alright to feel like a kid again, in fact, she would probably recommend it .
